DEHN protects Railway Systems

Damage to electronic railway equipment is not only caused by direct lightning strikes, e.g. into the contact line, rail or mast, but also by induced overvoltages and partial lightning currents due to an indirect lightning strike, e.g. into an adjacent structure. Moreover, overvoltages generated inside the railway system have to be considered.

A distinction is drawn between switching overvoltages with a typical duration of some microseconds and temporary overvoltages. These temporary overvoltages can last several seconds or even minutes until the system is disconnected by railway-specific protective devices. If element interlocking modules, modules or computer systems are destroyed, this can lead to malfunctions, obstructions and time-consuming fault locating. Therefore, in addition to external lightning protection measures, equipotential bonding and a consistent and coordinated surge protection concept are required. ...
